BERWICK STATION CAR PARK OPEN FOR BUSINESS
26 February, 2010
From the Minister for Public Transport
A major expansion of the Berwick Station carpark is complete providing commuters in Melbourne's growing south east with easier access to train services and a total of almost 800 car spaces.
Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said the upgrade which, is in use from today delivered more than 300 extra car spaces and a new secure bike cage.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to deliver the best transport network in Australia and we are providing commuters with the chance to drive to the station or ride their bike,” Mr Pakula said.
“The upgrade to car parking at this station recognises the needs of these growing suburbs in Melbourne's South-East, and will help to relieve parking pressure at the station.”
Member for Gembrook Tammy Lobato MP said the car park extension delivered on a pledge made by the Brumby Labor Government in the 2008/09 State Budget.
“The fully surfaced parking spaces feature CCTV and lighting, making them safer and better carparks for everyone,” Ms Lobato said.
“The decision to upgrade and extend these carparks is in recognition of the booming patronage on Melbourne's rail network. Power was connected to the car park site on the weekend allowing it to be open in time for Monday morning peak hour
“That is why we're creating more carparks, as well as ensuring they are safe with appropriate CCTV and lighting, which is great news especially for those who live far from their station.”
Ms Graley said that the additional car parking spaces were needed to meet the transport requirements of the growing community.
“The ability to ‘park and ride' is one of the most important public transport needs for Berwick residents,” Ms Graley said.
“Universal access is also an important need for residents, so I welcome the four additional disabled car parking spaces included in the upgrade.”
