Duncan supports WomenCan by taking part in their Larapinta trek

In August, 2Construct Director Duncan McPherson OAM took part in WomenCan’s Larapinta Trek in the Northern Territory.

Comprising of ANZGOG members (clinicians and researchers), carers, a survivor and other supporters of the cause from all over Australia, this small but mighty group set off on the adventure of a lifetime.

Covering nearly 100kms of the wonderous Larapinta trail over 5 days, the group – Team WomenCan Larapinta – enjoyed the diverse terrains of the Northern Territory, climbing mountains, traversing dessert tracks, tackling river crossings, enjoying swims in brisk waters and camping under the stars.

Included was a 1.45am start on one of the mornings, as the group ascended Mt Sonder for sunrise and for what has turned out to be a highlight for many.

For some, the trek was a great physical and mental challenge.

For others, it was the perfect way to honour women close to their hearts who have experienced or have been lost to gynaecological cancer.

But for all, it was an unforgettable journey, where strong bonds were made with each other and togethers they shared in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“A trek for the ages, with wonderful likeminded people from all our different backgrounds combined for a life experience we will never forget. Outstanding.” said trekker and WomenCan Team Teal Patron, Duncan McPherson OAM of his time with the WomenCan Larapinta trek team.

Congratulations to all 16 trekkers who not only gladly tackled the rugged Australian outback but who raised over $160,000 for ANZGOGs gynaecological cancer research in the lead up to the trek.

Set the challenge of raising $3,000 each as part of their adventure, WomenCan Larapinta trek team, undertook this challenge with the same gusto and determination that they showed on the trail itself!

From high tea’s to trivia nights, barefoot bowls and gym sessions – there was no shortage of fundraising ideas from this team!

“Fundraising was not my favorite thing to do” recalls Jacinta Frawley Werger, WomenCan’s trek ambassador, and ovarian cancer survivor.

“But even though it was awkward to ask for donations, it opened the opportunity to have some very important conversations about gynaecological cancer and the need for research. It provided my family, friends, acquaintances from the gym … even passing strangers… with a mechanism to talk about this embarrassing and hidden disease. And I was grateful to receive fundraising support and advice along the way from WomenCan.”

Jacinta, who was joined on the trek by her husband Oliver and credits her survival to research, took the opportunity to reflect on her journey following her ovarian cancer diagnosis.
